Supporting a bereaved child
Professionals are often concerned about getting things right when they are supporting a bereaved child, wanting to prevent any further damage. Taking time to listen and show that you care will help.
What Professionals can do

- Provide information for parents about how the person died

Provide information for parents on how children grieve

- Give ideas which may help parents to talk to their children e.g. Books

- Be prepared to give time to both children and parents

- Encourage the parents to involve the child in the funeral

- Help the child to express feelings, books, games etc

- Suggest making memory boxes and memory books

- Give them information about Mosaic where they can meet others in a similar situation

- Learn about Mosaic's grief counselling for young people

- Take part in Mosaic's childhood bereavement training for professionals

Encourage parents to

- Be honest with their children and talk to them using words that they understand

- Avoid using euphemisms e.g. "we have lost daddy" can be confusing for very young children

- Remember that children need a little information at a time

- Encourage children and young people to ask questions

- Answer their child's questions simply and honestly

- Involve children and young people in decisions i.e. funeral arrangements

- Not be afraid to ask for help

- Talk to the school
